On 8-9 January 2020, EEG is funding Energy futures: Green grids, electric cooking and the global energy transition, a second parliamentary roundtable co-organised by Climate Parliament and Wilton Park to discuss responses to climate change, and in particular the construction of cross-border grids for renewable energy trading.

It forms part of the Green Grid Initiative, convened by Climate Parliament, which brings together legislators, governments, companies and foundations – as well as project developers, regulators and investors – in an informal, innovative, collaborative leadership group to speed up the global transition to clean energy.

The roundtable will focus on two key parts of the global energy transition. One will be to examine the potential for transmission routes within Africa and South Asia, which could link together the vast resources of solar, wind, geothermal and hydropower across the continents to create a reliable supply of affordable renewable energy across large areas of Africa and Asia. Then on a local level, it will examine the potential for shifting cooking to clean electricity, to increase demand for solar power and make solar mini grids more attractive to private investors.

The event will take place in Abu Dhabi before the Legislators Forum and the Annual Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), bringing together parliamentarians with the aim of building actionable support for the best way to achieve a global energy transition which results in affordable, reliable renewable energy for all.
