At Arizona State University, USA, Clark A Miller is Professor in the School for the Future of Innovation in Society (SFIS) and Director of the Center for Energy & Society.

The Center’s research focuses on the social drivers, dynamics, and consequences of large-scale transformations in the energy sector and the opportunities to enhance the societal benefits and outcomes that derive from the clean energy revolution. Of particular concern are the futures of societies built on carbon-neutral energy systems, the human and organizational complexities of energy transitions, and the opportunities to leverage energy innovation to advance global goals for eradicating extreme poverty and inequality. The last of these initiatives includes projects around the globe working with communities and businesses to increase the social value created by energy access initiatives in ways that make them more effective drivers of diverse, community-centric sustainable development goals and, at the same time, more bankable for financial agencies.

Clark’s research interests also focus on science, technology, and globalisation, with an emphasis on the design and critical analysis of knowledge systems in support of policy and decision making at multiple scales. He also studies the governance challenges posed by new and emerging technologies and the social sustainability of transitions in complex, large-scale, socio-technological systems.

Clark is principal investigator of EEG project on ‘Improving social and economic impact of energy infrastructure investments in Sierra Leone through enhancement of social value creation, capacity-building, and decision support’ 

Clark has published over 50 articles on a wide range of topics in science and technology policy, studies of science and democracy, international relations, and energy policy. He is the editor of The Weight of Light: A Collection of Solar Futures (with Joey Eschrich), Designing Knowledge (with Tischa Munoz-Erickson), Changing the Atmosphere: Expert Knowledge and Environmental Governance (with Paul Edwards); Arizona's Energy Future (with Sharlissa Moore); and Nanotechnology, the Brain, and the Future (with Sean Hays, Jason Robert and Ira Bennett). He leads the social science and sustainability research team for the Quantum Energy and Sustainable Solar Technologies Engineering Research Center, one of the largest US photovoltaics research centers.

Clark held postdoctoral positions in the Department of Science & Technology Studies at Cornell University and the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and previously held faculty positions at Iowa State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He has a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University.
