Researcher of EEG projects 'Smart metering and electricity access in India' and 'High-frequency electricity, pollution and satellite data for tracking India’s Covid-19 impacts'

Dr. Anant Sudarshan is the South Asia Director of the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC). Before coming to UChicago, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Sustainability Science Program at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, as well as a Research Scientist at the MIT Energy Initiative. He received his PhD in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University and holds undergraduate and masters degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (Delhi) and Stanford University respectively.

Anant's research spans several aspects of energy and environment policy including the design of environmental regulation, reducing air-pollution, climate change, energy efficiency, electricity access, and renewable energy policy and has vast experience working with electricity utility companies in India. It includes work on the deployment of smart metres, use of high-frequency electricity data, air pollution data and satellite imagery. He is a researcher on the EEG project “Smart metering and electricity access” in Harayana, India - also see an interview with him on the topic. In addition, Anant authored an EEG Energy Insight on “Tracking India’s COVID-19 impacts and recovery using high-frequency electricity and pollution data” that included the use of satellite data on pollution and night light sources.
